Dinaïg Stall is a puppeteer and professor at UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada), where she leads the DESS in contemporary puppet theater.
Graduating in 2002 from ESNAM (École supérieure nationale des arts de la marionnette, Charleville-Mézières, France), she was the artistic director of her own company, Le Bruit du frigo, for 11 years. There, she developed her understanding of puppetry as a language, from design and construction to dramaturgy, interpretation, and staging. She has worked with other artists and companies, notably La Boîte à sel (France), with whom she created numerous shows in a valuable collaboration that continues despite the distance.
Since her arrival in Quebec in 2014, she has worked with several artists - Sariane Cormier for the short film La Volupté, Marie-Ève Huot for the show Des Pieds et des mains -, directed the show Partout ailleurs (Théâtre de l'Avant-Pays), and collaborated on various research-creation projects with musicologist Catrina Flint and Concordia University professor Mark Sussman.
She is part of IREF and RéQEF, respectively the feminist research institute of UQAM and the provincial network of Francophone feminist researchers in Quebec, and leads the research group FORMES - Research-creation group on puppet forms and processes (UQAM, Faculty of Arts).
Her writings have been published in several journals, including ArtPress 2, Agôn, Jeu, and Percées - L'Extension. She wishes to contribute to the cultural study of the arts of puppetry, particularly in connection with queer theories and practices. In the summer of 2022, she created, with the support of IREF, the first course in the Faculty of Arts at UQAM dedicated to queer approaches to the arts.
Her most recent research-creation projects explore the specific potential of the arts of puppetry to create from a queer feminist perspective, mixing puppetry with drag and burlesque. She enjoys using organic materials as well as DIY technologies (such as robotic and minimalist analog assemblies), in a do-it-yourself ethic.
